The Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary Project, located in Cambodia's Mondulkiri Province, covers 292,690 hectares within the Seima Protection Forest. Over its initial 10-year crediting period, the project is expected to prevent more than 14,000,000 tCO2e of emissions, with a total crediting duration of 60 years, from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2069.
The project addresses deforestation driven by factors such as improved road access, population growth, inadequate governance, and the undervaluation of biodiversity and ecosystem services. To combat these issues, the project employs a comprehensive strategy that includes strengthening legal frameworks, political support, law enforcement, community resource management, and the promotion of alternative livelihoods.
A key focus is on securing land titles for indigenous communities, which protects their rights and fosters cooperation in conservation efforts. Training is also provided to community members to prevent illegal logging and deforestation. From 2016 to 2017, law enforcement actions led to over 50 arrests and the confiscation of more than 1,000 pieces of illegal equipment.
The sanctuary is home to diverse wildlife, including carnivores, primates, and large waterbirds like the Black-shanked Douc, Giant Ibis, and Green Peafowl. The project also promotes sustainable livelihoods, such as ecotourism, through initiatives like the Jahoo Gibbon Camp. This camp generates over 14,000 USD annually, with revenue reinvested into community development and camp management.
The project is supported by the Royal Government of Cambodia through the Forestry Administration (FA) and the Wildlife Conservation Society Cambodia Program (WCS). The FA, with its extensive staff and network of local offices, is responsible for forest management and law enforcement. WCS, an international conservation NGO, provides technical expertise and oversees a vast portfolio of conservation projects globally. Both organizations have extensive experience in protected area management and community engagement, contributing to the project's success and sustainability.
